He was born on August 24, 1885 in Žlunice near Nový Bydžov and died on May 13, 1946 in Prague. Painter, graphic artist and illustrator. He studied the art locksmithing school in Hradec Králové, the School of Applied Arts in Prague and in the years 1903–1908 the Academy of Fine Arts (he was instructed to leave because he "worked all year outside the school and tended to deviate artistic goals not within the school"). At the beginning of his work he was influenced mainly by foreign artists. Under the impression of Munch's exhibition in 1905, a sketch of a country girl (1907) was created, the painting of Baruša was inspired by Cézanne, the Blooming Apple Tree by van Gogh. In the following years to seek his own style, in ink drawings he mastered the art of fauvism. In 1911 he first used a typical combination of two colors in the painting Idyll (Two Girls at Bath): the balancing warm red and cold blue, which appeared in his work until 1923. The motif of this combination was his childhood memories, when women in the countryside they wore red petticoats and blue blouses. In the same year he met cubism in Paris and his further work was strongly influenced by this clash. He exhibited together with the group Tvrdošíjní and belonged to the Mánes Association of Fine Artists. After 1923 he began to look for a new theme and painted the landscape. This period of Špála's work is called the Green Period, which lasted until 1926. The highlight of his painting of nature was the so-called Blue Period, when he used a single color in many shades. He used the painting of nature to express himself. After 1930 he resorted to a less distinctive, more opulent painting of bouquets and still life. In 1945 he was awarded the title of National Artist.
