Josef Liesler

He was born on September 19, 1912 in Vidolice near Kadan and died on August 23, 2005 in Prague. Painter, graphic artist and illustrator. He graduated from the Czech Technical University in Prague, Faculty of Architecture and Civil Engineering, where he studied drawing under professors Cyril Bouda, Oldřich Blažíček and Josef Sejpek. From 1938 to 1941 he worked as a member of the art group Seven in October. From 1942 to 1948 he was a member of SVU Mánes, in 1945 he became a member of the Hollar Association of Czech Graphic Artists, in 1958 he founded Group 58, later he was also a member of the art group Radar. He was also a member of the Royal Belgian Academy and was a holder of world and Czech awards and recognition in the field of artistic postage stamps. He had his own and distinctive painting style. Theoreticians in his work, created during the seventy years, particularly appreciate the universality, ease of improvisation and the exceptional diligence of the author. This combination allowed him to intervene in a wide variety of art fields: painting, free and applied graphics, stamp design, poster, illustration and monumental painting, mosaic and sgraffito. He created his most powerful works at the end of World War II. He combined quotations of well-known works with his own experiences, ironic distance and humor. Throughout his work there is a clear inspiration from surrealism. He himself described his work as “fantasy”. It combines fantastic ideas with memories, the current situation with historical memory. He painted apocalyptic images of monsters and phantoms, machines and fuzzy people, beasts and monsters that threaten humans.
